The Seekers’ Quest is a unique initiative started by volunteers of Islamic Help and students of Ebrahim College. Alhumdu-lillah, we have raised just over £100,000 as of October 2018, to provide Islamic education for the Ummah, and are now in our sixth season of events.
We want to help the Ummah become ‘spiritually, mentally and physically fitter’, through promoting Islamic education, organising sponsored fundraising challenge events and encouraging active and healthier lifestyles.
Ultimately, we aim to become ‘fit for purpose’, i.e. to worship Allah and serve His creation.
The story so far
We initially started volunteering for Islamic Help and after successfully organising and completing many fundraising events and challenges, in aid of a number of humanitarian disasters, we were reminded about the ayah:
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” [Ar-Rad:11]
Despite all the generous donations raised over a period of time, it had become clear to us that humanitarian aid alone, although massively important, would not alleviate the man-made and natural disasters afflicting places like Gaza, Pakistan, Iraq and so forth. We realised if we wanted lasting change we needed to change the condition of our hearts, to clean them, and increase our reliance upon Allah and beg Him to bestow His mercy upon the Ummah. To do this we’d need to learn more about our religion, to study the Quran and Sunnah.
“The seeking of knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” [Bayhaqi, ibn Majah]
By doing so we hoped to transform our lives the way our pious predecessors did and, insha-Allah, take on the humbling task of serving Allah and His creation.
“The best of people are those that bring most benefit to the rest of mankind.” [Daraqutni, Hasan]
Thus, we enrolled at Ebrahim College and gradually began to learn more about this beautiful, compassionate and inspirational way of life that is Islam. The more we learned the more we realised that perpetuating sacred knowledge is fundamental to the success of the Muslim Ummah, bi iznillah.
We want to continue our fundraising to deal with immediate issues in developing countries, whilst simultaneously supporting long-term intellectual and spiritual development of Muslims in the UK too. We believe the two go hand in hand because of the hadith:
“The similitude of believers in regard to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body; when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and fever.” [Muslim]
Thus The Seekers' Quest was born! Over the years, we have organised several successful challenges and lectures. This year, we aim to continue our work with another exciting challenge that will help us raise more money for the Ummah and become more fit for purpose.
